Overlooking the Strait

There is a place
Overlooking the entire Strait
It’s past the age-old stands
Of scraggly spruce and prickly pine
Dotted with black volcanic chunks
And brush strokes of barley and flax
All in contrast with deep blue sky
Golden yellow and knee-high

If we go you’ll holler hello
For you can hear gleeful honeybees
Making snacks for foraging bears
It’s a fun hand in hand hike
Mostly uphill
But you’ll breath real air
Listen to grasshoppers and the orchestral arrangments
Of flocks of frolicking birds
You could sit in a Cape Cod chair
Soak in the springtime sun
And count the otters and seals

if we go you can watch pods of magnificent whales
Or take in the colorful sails
Of boats bobbing on by
We could enjoy all this on a blanket
Just beyond the reach of the tide

Vanquished by music and a raging fire
By chanting and panting
All kinds of worry taken away
Up with the plumes of smoke and sparks
that spiral up to the sky
I’d love to bring you along
But then
I doubt you’d ever wish to return
To any other land
Which means it will be time well spent
When the two of us share next weekend
In a breath-taking place
Past the stands of spruce and pine
