Good evening,

And welcome to an Acme News exclusive presentation, “Investigative Reports”.For tonight’s show, we travelled back in time to discover the hidden secrets of postal workers.  Just how do they manage to do it?  Delivering through rain, sleet, and snow.  Consistently rated among the top most dangerous jobs with injuries and faced with competition from the internet and fast modern businesses like UPS with strong reputations, we wanted to get the low down.

So we asked mail carriers and drivers alike, each with over 20 years of service, this same  question:  “How have you been able to last so long at your job?”  Here are their answers:

1962

“Well the key is noticing the details.  Coming from the armed forces, I like to look sharp & crisp.  I maintain a decent level of presentation as part of my job, and it’s stood me in good stead.Yes, I’m proud of it, but modesty is a virtue.  Best not to be noticed.”
1972
“Oh man, I don’t know, you know?  It’s noticing the smallest detail, like the birds and butterflies out there on the beat.  When you’re carrying the mail, you gotta be in the groove, so you get yourself aligned with the universe.  Find that harmony, you know?  Hey, you’re not gonna show my smoke on camera, right?  Ahem, so if you notice the little stuff, focus on that, you forget the horror, the gory headlines, the weight on your back.”
1982
“I think I’d have to say it’s noticing the contrasts between having steady work in a time of economic growth, versus those on the street.  Joe Clark was toast in 6 months, but I plan on being around for the long haul.   I try to serve everybody equally, delivering the Royal Mail.  See here?  This is an official canvas relay bag from 10 years ago, marked “Royal Mail”.   They say we’re a Crown Corporation now, but if you want to stay relevant you need to believe in a higher purpose, so equality’s my thing.”
1992
“Lasting this long?  Hey that’s private,  not something to be talked about on camera!  Just kidding.  But seriously, the thing I noticed, if you still wanna make it, and retire being a postman, you’ve gotta know it’s hard work.  Keep your eye on your shoes, one after another.  Like my parents taught me, if you work hard, you’ll be alright.  Regardless of the budget cuts and all that.  It’s just the Liberals, right?  Business is business, you know?  But you gotta be noticed; don’t take crap from anybody!  That’s it.”
2002
“I really couldn’t say.  I’ve been doing this a long time, but noticed I still don’t have much seniority.  You’ve got to pay your dues.  Kind of like the country, slow but steady we’ll get there.  Meanwhile sure, volumes are dropping a bit, but I noticed I really enjoy talking with my customers.   Good for tips!  And I think there’ll always be  a place for the mail.  No one can replace meaningful communication.  Thanks, but I’ve gotta run.”
2012
“Oh, you’re talking to me?  Look I wish I could talk, but first I’d have to catch my breath.  Because, you’ve gotta keep going. I just try not to think about it. Maybe take a pill, have a beer.  Listen to my tunes.  Maybe it’ll turn around, but times are tough. Not like in the old days.  And you’ve got Harper now, around for a long time.   Look, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’ve got to keep running.  No time.  Plus, I’ve got stuff to do after work.”
2013
“The thing I’ve noticed, if you wanna stick around and have your health, you’ve got to go unnoticed.  There’s conflict going on all over the place.  A lot of turbulence at work, in society, everywhere.   Best plan is to pick your battles.  You hear a lot about money, etc.  So you notice the basics.  Focus on doing your job as best you can.  Take your breaks, that kinda thing.  Make a point of speaking to customers, being available for co-workers.  Because in the end, it’s dignity.  Realizing you can actually draw a line.  It’s the whole process, you know?   Of finally noticing.”

Good afternoon Mayor Robertson,

I sincerely hope this letter finds you and your family well as the City enjoys another spectacular Autumn.

I am writing to obtain information as to whether or not the rumours regarding “Little Saigon” are true. I was born in Vancouver, have always lived here, and have lived in the Kensington – Cedar Cottage area for 7 years. To this day not one resident that I’m aware of, has ever been contacted by the City’s staff or Councillors in any way, with regard to the Little Saigon subject ( unless that person contacted the city first ).

Yet, the article below appeared in today’s daily email list serve many of us receive, indicating that the City is going ahead with some sort of a plan, designating our neighbourhood as Little Saigon, and decorating it with signage.

This comes as a massive surprise to area residents, I’m sure, because there has not even been any news in the media or otherwise, that the City was at all interested in pursuing the Saigon topic. And this has been the case ever since the City passed a motion many months ago to some day look further into the subject, before proceeding any further with any action.

The posting below, which can also be found on the city’s website, is very upsetting in 2 clear areas. First, it states “the City is designating. . . ” Note the phrase “is designating”, as opposed to something along the lines of “the City is considering”, or, ” is interested in gathering neighbourhood opinions on . . . “.

Second, it says ” to offer your ideas on banner and sign designs and where they should go.” It does not leave the existence of any banners in doubt. It appears from the wording that the City’s staff have already decided there will in fact be banners, and they will be put up somewhere within some sort of geographic area, whether or not the majority of the area’s residents approve. What’s more, as I’ve indicated, nobody residing within the general area has heard so much as one single peep from the City, or anyone else, that there even was anything at all in the “Little Saigon” hopper. So all of this comes as a huge surprise.

It honestly feels as though the carpet has been unceremoniously yanked from under the neighbourhood’s feet.

This lack of consultation is utterly unacceptable to anyone in this area, and many of us, i am sure, are very offended to hear mistruths spread around that a huge number of people live or work in this specific area, of Vietnamese origin, when virtually anybody can easily find out for themselves the exact opposite is true.

Please tell the citizens of Cedar Cottage what is going on, and make some sort of meaningful effort to seek out what our positions, perspectives, ideas, and feelings might be on the matter BEFORE the face of the area is changed in whatever ways the City’s staff appear to have already decided on.

Sincerely,

Had a piece all written up, only to be accidentally wiped out. This won’t replace it, but is a start.

Overlooking the Strait

There is a place
Overlooking the entire Strait
It’s past the age-old stands
Of scraggly spruce and prickly pine
Dotted with black volcanic chunks
And brush strokes of barley and flax
All in contrast with deep blue sky
Golden yellow and knee-high

If we go you’ll holler hello
For you can hear gleeful honeybees
Making snacks for foraging bears
It’s a fun hand in hand hike
Mostly uphill
But you’ll breath real air
Listen to grasshoppers and the orchestral arrangments
Of flocks of frolicking birds
You could sit in a Cape Cod chair
Soak in the springtime sun
And count the otters and seals
It’s a place where many creatures come to play
if we go you can watch pods of magnificent whales
Or take in the colorful sails
Of boats bobbing on by
We could enjoy all this on a blanket
Just beyond the reach of the tide

This place even has a hot tub and tennis court
But pressure and prequisites
I definitely want to watch your face forget
Vanquished by music and a raging fire
By chanting and panting
All kinds of worry taken away
Up with the plumes of smoke and sparks
that spiral up to the sky
I’d love to bring you along
But then
I doubt you’d ever wish to return
To any other land
Which means it will be time well spent
When the two of us share next weekend
In a breath-taking place
Past the stands of spruce and pine
